The modern Men’s Shed is an updated version of the backyard shed that has long been a part of Australian culture, whereby Men’s Sheds are springing up all around Australia and internationally.
The Coochie Men’s Shed is now operational, and there are various activities taking place on the premises, including maintenance and servicing of Coochie Progress Association wheelchairs, and other items are being undertaken, as required.
We have been coordinating Sausage Sizzles on the days that the Op Shop opens for business, and are always present at the Coochie Markets.
One welcome development is that the Shed is becoming a drop-in destination for men on the island, who can often be found simply talking and sharing stories about the challenges and joys of manhood. The Shed is alcohol and smoke free, but there’s plenty of coffee and soft-drinks, and always companionship.
The Coochiemudlo Island Men’s Shed Inc. is a member of the Australian Men’s Shed Association, which is funded by the Federal Department of Health to provide practical support, and aims to improve the health and wellbeing of members and reduce the risk of preventable health issues.
Men’s good health is based on many factors including feeling good about yourself, being productive, contributing to your community and maintaining an active body and mind. So, becoming a member of a Men’s Shed provides a safe and busy environment where men can find many of these things in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship.
And, importantly, there is no pressure. Men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all they’re looking for. Members of Men’s Sheds come from all walks of life – the bond that unites them is that they are men with time on their hands and would like something meaningful to do with that time.
A good Men’s Shed has a Management Committee that has developed a safe and happy environment where men are welcome to work on community projects, specific Men’s Shed projects or a project of their choice, in their own time and where the only ‘must’ is to observe safe working practices…..
.….all in the Spirit of Mateship.
Please Note: Redland Council have currently enforced a noise ban on the work place, which in turn restricts the use of ANY power tools, at present.
