The Coochiemudlo Artisan Collective is a community group representing artists, makers and creatives.
The group was formed in 2019 with the purpose of bringing together artisans, artists and their supporters, to create opportunities for sharing, skill development and promotion of the many talents that they had to offer to the Coochiemudlo community and to the public in general.
Initially, an area at the side of Curlew Cafe was dedicated to the “Artisans Alley” and merchandise was offered for sale to the public on weekends. This was very successful and continues to attract both locals and visitors with the varied offering of goods.
The owner of the Curlew Cafe, Carolyn Brammer, then offered the group the use of the recently renovated rooms at the rear and above the cafe, to display their work. This generous offer was quickly accepted and an Artisan’s Gallery was created. This now opens on a weekly basis, Friday through Sunday, from 10am to 2pm and is staffed by members of the group. Over the holiday period these hours have been extended to include both Wednesday and Thursday.
The display in the gallery is changed on a regular basis so that the merchandise offered is fresh and original. Once items are sold these are also replaced with others by the exhibiting artist or artisan. Our islands have always attracted creative people as they provide a wonderful environment that fosters creativity and Coochiemudlo is not different. With the creation of the Collective we now have a means of developing and extending this creativity.
